Not all tragedies stem from violence; some can begin with a single smile. Such is the premise of Satur, a compelling story by Francisco V. Coching, first published in 1950 in Pilipino Komiks. Set in the town of Talisay, the narrative centers on the beautiful Cristina.

Aware of the power her beauty holds, Cristina has been accustomed to receiving gifts from her admirers. However, her world would take a turn with the arrival of Satur, a mysterious foreigner on a secret mission, igniting a dangerous game of lust and power.

Coching’s comic explores the politics of love, honor and control in the time of the Spanish colonial era. But Satur isn’t just a story about love, it offers a keen observation of human relationships—and how one can fall prey to beauty.

Satur was later adapted into a film by Sampaguita Pictures, with the esteemed director Lamberto Avellana at the helm. Manuel Conde starred as Satur,  while Delia Razon and Jaime dela Rosa were cast in the roles of Cristina and Sendong, respectively.
